Adopt an Artwork
Adopt an Artwork is a program which gives you the opportunity to contribute towards conserving and maintaining works of art in the Art Gallery of Ballarat. Like galleries all around the world, the Gallery holds works in its collection which it is unable to put on exhibition, either because they require conservation work or because they need new or more appropriate frames. These works remain in storage, unable to be enjoyed by Gallery visitors or included in touring exhibitions.
Why is conservation important?
Conservation of works of art to a museum standard is a highly specialized and expensive process. This kind of work can only be done with public support. The Gallery is keen to ensure that conservation gets the funds it requires in order to ensure the strength of the Collection into the future.
Adopt an Artwork gives you an opportunity to assist with this vital part of caring for the Gallery’s stunning Collection. Your assistance will result in spectacular improvements to works in the Collection.
How does it work?
The Gallery has a range of works that require conservation treatment, including large oil paintings, drawings and prints and items of costume. The conservation requirements and costs for these different items vary widely so we have adoptions to suit a range of donors – individuals, corporations, philanthropic trusts and foundations.
Adoptions can also be made by groups of individuals contributing towards a group adoption. If adopting an artwork is beyond your budget, why not join with some friends and adopt it together?
How is the money received?
Your donation can be received directly by the Art Gallery of Ballarat, which is a Not for Profit Company Limited by guarantee and is an organisation that has been endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR).
Donations can also be made to the Art Gallery of Ballarat Foundation, a Charitable Trust established in 1998 for the future benefit of the Art Gallery of Ballarat. The main aim of the Foundation is to establish a substantial capital endowment to earn sufficient income to assist the Gallery with specific projects or acquisitions.

Donations are tax deductible and are receipted.
