Charles Rolando
An ostrich farm, South Africa (morning) 1893
oil on canvas
This painting is one of a pair by an Italian born artist who enjoyed a degree of success in Melbourne in the boom period of the late 1880s. The work examplifies a taste for exotic scenes that was popular in the late Victorian era. While arguably not a major work in its own right, the restoration of this work and hanging next to its conterpart will create a visually powerful effect in our display devoted to the art of the period immediately prior to the Australian Impressionists.
