George Folingsby
Mary Tudor and Lady Jane Grey c. 1870
oil on canvas
A highly important history painting by the second head of the National Gallery of Victoria School - the teacher of such artists as Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton. Works like this which derive from the European narrative tradition, were ultimately the inspiration for the great narrative works of the so called Heidelberg School.
