The elegant classical frame of what is arguably the Art Gallery of Ballarat’s most important British painting has been marred by overpainting with domestic gold paint. The surface of this frame needs to be carefully distressed as it is unlikely that it was ever highly gilded.

This frame has been covered in bronze paint and retains all its decorative elements. The bronze paint has to be removed before preparation for regilding and ageing.
